CV or resume — what Indian employers actually mean

In India the words "CV" and "resume" are used almost interchangeably for the vast majority of jobs. When a company asks you to "send your CV", they nearly always mean the concise, one-to-two page document the rest of the world calls a resume. So unless you are applying for something academic or research-based, do not overthink the label — build the standard professional document and you are correct either way.

The genuine distinction matters in two places. A true academic CV — for a PhD, a research position, or a university faculty role — is a long, exhaustive record of publications, conferences, grants, and teaching, and can run many pages. For every other job in India, longer is not better; a tight, scannable two-pager beats a padded five-page "CV" every time.

The correct CV format (for normal jobs)

For 95% of roles, use a reverse-chronological, single-column structure with standard headings. This is the format recruiters expect and ATS software parses cleanly:

  • Header — name, phone, professional email, city, and relevant links. No photo, age, or marital status.
  • Professional summary — two or three lines tuned to the role.
  • Skills — the keywords the job is asking for, that you genuinely have.
  • Work experience — reverse-chronological, with quantified bullet points.
  • Education — degree, institution, year, and CGPA/percentage if strong.
  • Optional — projects, certifications, achievements, and (for academic CVs only) publications.

Leave out the outdated bits

Many Indian CV templates still carry conventions from a decade ago that now work against you. Drop the photograph (it confuses ATS and invites bias), the date of birth, gender, marital status, and father’s name — none are relevant to your candidacy. Remove the "Declaration" line and signature at the bottom; they waste space and signal an old template. And replace any "Career Objective" ("seeking a challenging role to utilise my skills") with a results-focused summary that says what you actually offer.

What you keep should earn its place. A recruiter scanning a CV in seconds is looking for relevance and evidence, not personal trivia. Every line that is not helping you get the interview is quietly hurting you.

The academic CV is a different document

If you genuinely need an academic or research CV, the rules invert: completeness matters more than brevity. Include a full publications list (formatted in your field’s citation style), conferences and presentations, research and teaching experience, grants and fellowships, technical skills, and references. It can run to several pages, and that is expected. But even here, structure and readability win — a clear, consistent layout makes a long CV navigable rather than exhausting.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CV the same as a resume in India?+

For almost all jobs, yes — the terms are used interchangeably and employers expect the same concise, one-to-two page document. Only academic and research roles call for a long, detailed CV with a full publications list.

What is the best CV format in India?+

A clean, single-column, reverse-chronological format with standard headings and quantified bullets, kept to one or two pages. It is the most ATS-friendly and the most readable.

Should a CV include a photo and personal details?+

No, not for standard jobs. Skip the photo, date of birth, gender, marital status, and declaration line — they are outdated, can confuse ATS, and add no value. Your city and contact details are enough.

How long should a CV be?+

One page for freshers, up to two for experienced professionals. Only a genuine academic CV should run longer, because it must list publications and research in full.
